Alfabia, our newest "classic", our Frenchie, our elegant dark soul... A rose by any other name would smell as sweet!
This is the now third vintage of Alfabia, and it's already a much loved wine in our range and again this year a marriage between the lush, juicy and velvety red fruit of Merlot and the darker, spicer and more exotic Cabernet.
This year our Merlot barrels were SO delicious that we actually decided to use all, but 2 half barrels of #67/#76 that were so magnificent that we needed to make 500L of a Cloud Wine of those. The rest, including the remaining half of those 2 magical barrels was blended and spiced up with 3 selected barrels of Cabernet. Namely barrels #57, #62 and #12 that together added just that extra ompf and depth to the Merlot that we wanted.
How does Alfabia 2023 taste?
Sexy dark nose with blackberries, blackcurrants, sweet licorce and ripe prunes. With a bit of air it also shows a beautifully floral side with cherry blossom and jasmine.
On the palate it’s polished and seamless, with a layered texture offering fruit on spice on leathery notes and it just keeps coming. This is so aristocratic with the most polished tannnis ever and a sublime balance. Oh my, this this dark core of fruit and spice that just keeps lingering on and makes me think about a handsome tall man in a black Tom Ford suit!
How to best enjoy Alfabia 2023
Open this when you’re in the mood for RnB or Soul. Serve it with beef Wellington and a simple salad dressed with a vinaigrette of if you’re out of time; a great steak with sautéed mushrooms with garlic! Simple but efficient!
