The journey
For the very first time, Teix is a pure expression of Callet — one hundred percent of the island’s own grape, standing entirely on its own. This was always the ambition behind the wine, and in our early enthusiasm we imagined we might reach it from the very first vintage.
But the old and experienced hands on the island knew better, and we have to admit now that they were right: Callet, as a vine, needs years before it can produce fruit of the quality and expression to carry a wine alone, without help from any other variety.
We have watched this unfold vintage after vintage, the proportion of Callet growing a little more each year, and with it our love for this wine. The 2024 is simply stunning. When we began making it, we tasted through every barrel destined for the blend — and in this vintage, every barrel magically fit together so perfectly!
But as always, in our endless search for perfection, we went looking for that one tiny touch of something more. It turned out to be 50 litres of barrel B70 Garnacha — in such a small proportion that it doesn’t even appear on the label. Fifty litres of Garnacha to 3,450 litres of Callet.
How does Teix 2024 taste?
What a colour — I rarely speak about colour when describing a wine, but this one deserves it. It is extraordinarily beautiful, and the nose follows in the same spirit: almost poetic, with rose petals and a high, bright, elegant lift. Wild strawberries abound, joined by rosemary and lavender carried in on Mediterranean air, a touch of wet earth and cedar, the faintest whisper of fine oak, and that archetypal mineral note that can only come from the soil itself.
On the palate, it is pure finesse — fresh, remarkably harmonious, beautifully put together, carrying the same elegance found in the nose. The texture is soft, with fine-grained tannins you barely notice, a bright thread of acidity, and a modest hand of alcohol. It's quite impossible to think that this wine has been in oak for more than one year! It is so masterfully handled that it simply supports the wine rather than announcing itself.
Give this wine time in the glass and it opens slowly, speaking first in whispers before rising to something like song. The same wild strawberry glows through from nose to palate, joined now by a touch of fried fig and tomato leaf. It is light yet long, delicate yet complex, and the finish lingers, savoury and finesse-driven, closing on fine mineral notes and a whisper of exotic spice — a wine that speaks with soul and personality rather than muscle.
How to best enjoy Teix 2024
Food-wise, this calls to mind one of our favourite dishes — a cockerel, slow-cooked at low temperature and served in a creamy sauce with morels, or, failing that, with cep mushrooms.
If that feels like too much cooking for the day, Teix 2024 is equally at home as an all-round wine for a lighter style of tapas.
As for company, this is a wine for every occasion. Its interplay of balance and lightness against complexity makes it just as satisfying to drink alone — lightly chilled in the afternoon, or a touch warmer late in the evening — as a meditation wine, best enjoyed while listening to some quiet, unhurried jazz.
